Individual Assessment

For people who are not familiar with data literacy, it is very helpful to have an easy way to assess their fundamental skills related to data literacy and mindsets. Regardless of what role these play when it comes to data. Below is one such assessment. It contains 22 questions divided into 6 sections: understanding data, interpreting business requirements, creating and interpreting visualizations, applying the human element of data literacy, and communicating with data and mindsets:

Understanding data

This section assesses how well you understand raw data, including its type, format and any properties. It also determines how well you understand simple statistical terminology about various descriptive statistics.

Can determine whether data is qualitative or quantitative.

Can determine which level of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio) applies to certain data.
3.
Can determine whether data is discrete or continuous.
4.
Can understand simple statistical terminology and interpret the results of simple descriptive statistics such as distributions, frequencies, ranks, percentiles, means, medians, mode, range, standard deviation and interquartile ranges.
5.
Can apply averages, medians and modes and choose the right type based on the data and demand.
6.
Can identify security, privacy and data ethics issues related to the data being used.

Interpret business requirements

This section assesses how well you can understand the question asked, identify relevant data and how to create good Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

Can put a business problem into quantifiable form as an analytical question.
8.
Can create Key Performance Indicators that meet the characteristics of a KPI.
9.
Can assess whether data is relevant or irrelevant for the decision to be made.

Create and interpret data visualizations

This section assesses how well you can create and interpret data visualizations. Because this is a basic assessment for basic data understanding, the focus is only on basic visualizations.

Can select and create a basic visualization.

Can apply appropriate design components of visualizations, including the use of color, annotations, and pre-attentive properties.

Can understand what information a basic visualization should convey.
13.
Can recognize and describe simple patterns and trends in a visualization.

Applying the human element of data literacy.

This section assesses how well you understand cognitive bias and its influence on your view of data and information. In addition, it is determined how well you can recognize and apply techniques to reduce the influence of bias.

Can describe cognitive biases and how they can influence the interpretation of data and insights.

Can apply techniques to reduce cognitive bias.

Communicating with data

This part assesses how well you can communicate insights and decisions using data.

Can determine the appropriate method and mechanism to communicate the decision.
17.
Willingness to ask additional and clarifying questions.
18.
Be open to new insights, even if they do not match your previous beliefs.
19.
The willingness to question your own contextual knowledge and its influence on the interpretation of data and insights.
20.
Be open to the fact that your interpretation of data and insights may be influenced by cognitive biases.
21.
Willingness to question the relevance of the results to the data or insights presented.
22.
Objectivity in presenting data, including no deliberate manipulation to misrepresent the information to consumers.
